Who gets texts: consent basics

Updated · 2 min read

BubbleSMS only texts customers who said yes to texts from your store. No consent, no text.

Your customers and their SMS marketing consent sync from Shopify, for example from the SMS consent checkbox at checkout. When a customer opts in or out in Shopify, we pick it up.

You can’t upload a list or add numbers by hand. Everyone we text is a customer of your store with consent on record.

Checked before every send

Consent isn’t checked once and forgotten. Before every message, ours or your team’s, we check that the customer is still subscribed. If they aren’t, nothing is sent. In a thread, the side panel shows the consent record: where it came from, and that it’s checked before every send. With no consent on record, it says “No texting consent on record, so nothing can be sent to this customer.”

Customers shows each person’s consent, and the top of the page shows how many have SMS consent, how many opted out in the last 30 days and how many are on iMessage. Filter by Subscribed, Opted out or No consent.

Your side of it

  • Collect consent clearly, with wording that says customers will get marketing texts. The SMS consent checkbox at Shopify checkout is the usual way.
  • We host a messaging terms page for your brand that explains what customers agree to, how to stop and how to get help. We prepare it for you.
  • Only text about things the Acceptable Use policy allows.

We serve US stores only for now.

This guide explains how BubbleSMS works. It isn’t legal advice. If you’re unsure whether your opt-in wording is enough, ask your own counsel.
